One of the latest requirements created by one of our customers:

1.“We could have a situation when thousands of same type of exceptions is logged into the Exception handling application. This causes thousands of email/pagers to be sent. Can behavior be enhanced to email/page for only a large number of same type of exceptions in a short period of time, i.e. 5000 null-pointer errors within 60 seconds? 

And another one:

2. “When the users enters a query that will retrieve a large number of messages (we have over 700000 messages logged and we are anticipating over some number in the amount of 10 million or more) we need a screen that will warn the user of the fact that this will be possibly slow action…“.

Even with such a simple architecture, it is obvious that the challenge is enormous. Currently we are living a period that traditional EAI technology is merging with e-business oriented solutions such as application servers. Also ERP vendors are increasingly moving into this space. Given the anticipated importance of e-business the stakes are enormous but as yet no clear leaders do exist.

Does this mean that you have to wait? No. The potential business benefits of EAI approaches, even in today’s context, are too important. Nevertheless, your first implementation will most likely be a tactical one: selecting the appropriate vendor for a specific business requirement or even a technical need. So, here we are.
